Apps for Alberta's Growing Tech Scene
Alberta's economy is known for energy and agriculture, but its tech sector has grown fast. Calgary has become a hub for fintech, energy software and startups. Edmonton is home to the University of Alberta and one of Canada's leading AI research institutes. And across the province, oil and gas, construction and farming companies are moving paper and phone calls into apps.
That mix means a lot of practical apps: field apps for crews on remote sites, safety and inspection tools, customer apps for growing retailers, and MVPs for founders in Calgary and Edmonton.
The App Bros Canada builds those apps for Alberta businesses. We work by video call and phone, and every project starts with a free, confidential consultation.
Where We Work in Alberta
We build apps for businesses in these Alberta cities, and anywhere else in the province:
In Red Deer, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray or a small town? We work remotely with every client, so distance isn't a problem. Call 1-866-767-2102 to talk about your app.
Funding and Support in Alberta
Some programs can help Alberta businesses with the cost of real R&D, new products or hiring. A routine app build rarely qualifies, but here's what's available:
- PrairiesCan is the federal economic development agency for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It funds businesses scaling up or bringing new products to market.
- Alberta Innovates is the province's research and innovation agency, with programs for tech companies and startups.
- SR&ED tax credits and NRC IRAP are federal programs open to eligible businesses in every province.
Program rules shift often, so check each official site. Our Canadian app funding guide explains the main options. This is general information, not funding advice.
Alberta Has Its Own Privacy Law
Like B.C., Alberta has its own privacy law for private businesses: the Personal Information Protection Act, or PIPA. Businesses that collect personal information within Alberta generally follow it instead of the federal PIPEDA. Health information held by doctors, pharmacies and other custodians has its own separate rules.
If your app collects personal information from Albertans, we plan for these rules during design. We'll work with your privacy lead or lawyer on the details. This is general information, not legal advice.

What Alberta Clients Ask Us First
Alberta business owners tend to be practical. The first questions we hear are about cost, timelines and whether the app will hold up in the field. So we answer them early. At your free consultation, we'll talk through what your app has to do, who will use it and where. Then we'll give you a planning range in Canadian dollars and a rough timeline, before you commit to anything.
If you're not sure yet whether you need an app at all, we'll tell you that too. Sometimes a simpler tool does the job.
Working Across Time Zones
Alberta runs on Mountain Time, two hours behind our Eastern Time hours. Our weekday hours run until 9 p.m. Eastern, which is 7 p.m. in Calgary and Edmonton. Saturday hours run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mountain.
Alberta App Development FAQs
Can you build apps that work without cell service?
Yes. Many Alberta field apps need to work on remote sites. We can build apps that save data on the phone and sync it when the connection comes back, so crews never lose a report.
What does an app cost for an Alberta business?
Our planning ranges are the same across Canada. A clickable prototype runs $13,500 to $21,000 CAD, a lean MVP $21,000 to $42,000, and most growth builds $28,000 to $71,000. Your price depends on your features, platforms and backend.
