What does it cost to build an app in Canada?

Apps with payments or sensitive data, like finance and health apps, often run $57,000 to $141,000 or more. These are planning ranges, not quotes. Your price depends on your features, platforms, backend and timeline.
How long does it take to build an app?
A clickable prototype takes a few weeks. Most first versions take a few months from kickoff to launch, depending on how many features you need. You get a timeline in writing before any build starts.
Should I build for iPhone, Android, or both?
If most of your users are on one platform, starting there can save money. If you need both from day one, a cross-platform app is often the smart choice. We'll look at who your users are and help you decide at your free consultation.
Flutter or React Native?
Both are proven and widely used. Flutter is great for apps with custom visuals and a strong brand look. React Native is a good fit if you already have a React web app or web developers. We'll recommend the one that fits your app and your team.
Can government funding help pay for my app?
Sometimes, in part. Federal programs like SR&ED tax credits and NRC IRAP support real R&D and new technology, not routine app builds. Regional agencies and some provinces also fund new products. What privacy rules apply to my app?
If your app collects personal information, Canadian privacy law applies. Most private businesses follow PIPEDA, the federal law. B.C. and Alberta have their own laws for businesses in those provinces, and health information often has extra rules. Who owns the code and the app store accounts?
We recommend your business owns its Apple Developer and Google Play accounts, so the app is listed under your name. Ownership of the code and design files is set out in writing in your project agreement, so you'll know exactly what you get before any work starts.
Will you sign an NDA?
Yes. Your idea stays confidential from the first call, and we're happy to sign an NDA before you share the details.
Can ChatGPT or an AI app builder make my app instead?
For a quick prototype or a personal project, AI tools can help. For an app you plan to sell, grow or run a business on, you need custom design, a solid backend, security, and approval from Apple and Google. That's where an experienced team pays for itself. We also add AI features to apps when they help users, not just because they're popular.
Do you work in French?
We work with clients in English at this time. We can build apps that show English and French screens, using translations you provide or approve.
Where are you based?
The App Bros Canada is the Canadian arm of The App Bros, a studio based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Our team is distributed and works with businesses across Canada by video call and phone, on Eastern Time with evening and Saturday hours.
What happens after my app launches?
We keep it running. We fix issues users report, keep the app working with new iPhone and Android updates, and help you plan new features. We can also help market your app so the right people find it.
