Healthcare App Development in Canada

Patient, clinic and virtual care apps, built with Canadian privacy rules in mind.

Apps for Canadian Clinics and Health Startups

Canadian patients now expect to book, message and even see their care team from their phone. Clinics want fewer calls, fewer no-shows and less paperwork. Health startups want to test a new idea with patients fast, without cutting corners on privacy.

The App Bros Canada builds health and medical apps for clinics, care providers and health startups across the country. Our team built PPA (Pocket Patient Advocate), a patient app that's live on the App Store. We design for the people who will use the app, including seniors and caregivers. And we plan for privacy from the first screen.

PPA (Pocket Patient Advocate)

Turns medical jargon into plain language and helps patients prepare questions for doctor visits.

PPA (Pocket Patient Advocate) helps patients and caregivers speak up for their own care. It turns hard medical terms into plain words. It uses AI to suggest questions to ask before a doctor visit. And it keeps records in one safe place. The result is clearer talks with doctors and fewer mix-ups.

Canadian Health Privacy, Planned In

Health data is some of the most private data an app can hold. In Canada, the rules depend on who you are and where you work. Most provinces have their own health privacy law for doctors and clinics. Two examples are Ontario's PHIPA and Alberta's Health Information Act. Other private businesses usually follow PIPEDA or their own province's privacy law.

We plan for these rules during design:

  • Consent screens that are clear and easy to update later.
  • Encryption for data on the phone, on servers and in transit.
  • Access controls, strong sign-in and automatic sign-out.
  • Audit logs that show who viewed or changed a record.
  • Canadian data hosting when you need it. Many health groups want patient data kept in Canada. We can host it in data centres in Montreal or Toronto.

Meeting the rules also takes your own policies, staff training and contracts. So we suggest you also work with your privacy officer or a lawyer. This is general information, not legal advice.

When an App Becomes a Medical Device

Health Canada treats some health apps as medical devices. This is most likely for software that helps diagnose, treat or monitor a condition. Booking, reminder and education apps usually aren't. If your idea is close to that line, we'll flag it early. Then you can get expert advice before you build.

What a Healthcare App Costs

Health apps need extra work on security and testing, so they cost more than simple apps:

App typeIncludesPlanning range (CAD)
Finance or healthcare appSecurity, sensitive data, compliance, dashboards, integrations$57,000 – $141,000+

Planning range, not a quote. A booking or education app with no health records can cost much less.

Services for Healthcare Apps

Many health apps are built native for the best security and phone features, like Face ID and Apple Health. Native iOS development Clear, accessible design matters even more when your users are patients and seniors. Healthcare app UI/UX design

Healthcare App FAQs

Can you build an app that meets Canadian health privacy rules?

We build apps with privacy in mind: consent, encryption, access controls, audit logs and Canadian hosting where needed. Full compliance also depends on your own policies and contracts. We'll work with your privacy officer or lawyer on those.

How much does a healthcare app cost in Canada?

Apps that handle patient data, compliance and integrations usually run $57,000 to $141,000 CAD or more. Simpler booking or education apps with no health records can cost far less.

Can a health app connect to our EMR?

Often, yes. Many electronic medical record systems offer ways to share bookings, records or results. We review your system at the consultation and tell you what's possible.
